Rosca de Reyes: History, Tradition, and Flavor That Unites Generations

January 6th holds a special place in Mexican culture. Known as Three Kings Day, it is a celebration filled with history, symbolism, and shared traditions. At the heart of this day is a bread many now consider deeply Mexican, yet one shaped by centuries of cultural exchange: the Rosca de Reyes.

Rooted in the Christian celebration of the Epiphany and enriched by European social customs, the Rosca became part of Mexican life during the 19th century. Introduced through French pastry traditions and later adapted to local culture, it evolved into a symbol of family, community, and togetherness.

The hidden figurine inside the Rosca represents the Baby Jesus, and tradition holds that whoever finds it commits to hosting tamales and atole on February 2nd, Candlemas Day—connecting bread to maize and extending the celebration beyond January.

At Jus’ Tacos, we honor food as living history. This season, we proudly offer our artisan Rosca de Reyes, made with respect for tradition and love for our Mexican heritage.
